Reading the New AI Performance Report in Search Console

Through August 2026, Google generative AI performance reporting in Search Console appeared across many more properties. By the middle of the month a large number of site owners could see, for the first time, how their pages perform inside AI Overviews and AI Mode rather than only in the traditional blue links.

It is genuinely useful data. It is also easy to misread, and the misreading leads people to make the wrong changes.

What the report actually contains

The generative AI data sits alongside your normal Search results performance, and gives you impressions, clicks and position for queries where an AI surface was involved. The important structural point is that it is folded into your overall totals rather than being a separate universe. Your headline numbers already contain it.

That matters because it explains a pattern many site owners noticed months before they could see the cause: impressions holding steady or rising while clicks fell. You were being shown. You were not being clicked.

The metric people misread

Position, in this context, does not mean what it means in classic results. A page cited inside an AI Overview is not sitting at a rank in a list. Research through 2026 has repeatedly found that AI answers cite pages outside the top ten, a pattern also visible in Google own Search Central guidance, including sources ranking in positions eleven to twenty, because the system is selecting for a clear answer to a specific sub question rather than for overall page authority.

So a page with strong AI impressions and a mediocre position is not underperforming. It is doing exactly the job that surface rewards.

What to look at instead of clicks

If you only track clicks, this entire channel looks like a loss. A better read uses four signals together.

  • Impressions on informational queries. This is your citation footprint. Rising impressions with flat clicks means you are being used as a source.
  • Branded search volume. The most reliable downstream proof that AI visibility is working. People read the answer, remember the name, and search for you directly later.
  • Direct traffic. Same mechanism, different measurement.
  • Conversion rate of the traffic you do get. Visitors arriving from an AI surface have usually read a summary already, so they arrive further along. Lower volume, better qualified.

We wrote about this measurement gap in detail in why traffic falls while rankings hold.

What the report does not tell you

Be clear about the limits, because vendors are selling certainty here that does not exist.

It does not tell you which specific AI Overview you appeared in, what the answer said, or which competitors were cited alongside you. It covers Google surfaces only, so ChatGPT, Perplexity and other assistants are invisible to it entirely. And AI Overview content is regenerated frequently, so a citation is not a stable position you hold.

How to act on it

The practical response is narrower than most advice suggests. Find the queries where you have high AI impressions and low clicks, then open those pages and ask whether the page gives a reader a reason to visit that the summary cannot supply.

Original data, a specific process, real examples, a calculator, pricing, or an opinion someone would want to check are all things a synthesised answer cannot fully replace. A page that only restates general knowledge has no argument for the click, and no amount of schema will create one.

Structured, citable formatting still helps you get selected. Our guide on getting cited in AI answers covers that side. Google own documentation on AI features in Search is worth reading directly rather than through commentary.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the AI performance data in Search Console?

It appears within the Performance section alongside your Search results data rather than as a wholly separate report. Availability rolled out progressively through 2026 and expanded significantly in August, so properties that did not show it earlier may show it now.

Are AI Overview impressions counted in my normal Search Console totals?

Yes. The data is folded into your overall Search performance figures rather than sitting separately. This is why many sites saw impressions hold steady while clicks fell without any visible ranking change.

Why do my impressions go up while clicks go down?

Because you are being shown inside an answer the user does not need to click through to complete. This is the defining pattern of AI-influenced search results. It is a visibility change rather than a ranking penalty, and the fix is giving readers a reason to click rather than trying to rank higher.

Does Search Console show ChatGPT or Perplexity visibility?

No. Search Console reports on Google surfaces only. Visibility in other assistants requires separate tracking tools or referral analysis in your analytics platform, and none of them offer the completeness Search Console gives you for Google.

How do I get more clicks from AI Overviews?

Give the page something the summary cannot carry: original data, a specific documented process, real examples, pricing, a tool, or a clearly attributed opinion. Pages that restate general knowledge have no argument for the click regardless of how well they are structured.
